Last week, I shared my daily prayer practice. This week, I want to share with you my daily habit of meditation.

The Benefits of Stillness

There are numerous, well-documented benefits to a daily meditation habit (or other stillness practice). Here are just a few of the science-based benefits:

  • Reduces stress
  • Controls anxiety
  • Helps you sleep
  • Enhances self-awareness
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Increases mental focus

Sounds good huh? 🙂 The best part is that it only takes 10 minutes twice a day.

From a spiritual perspective, meditation is where we get the answers we’ve been praying for. That’s why the 11th step of 12 step programs require prayer AND meditation.

My Daily Habit of Meditation

I have tried both mediation and centering prayer. While I enjoy centering prayer, I find meditation just works better for me.

The Medito Foundation created a free app available for both Andriod and iPhone that I love.

When I first started meditating, I struggled with getting through just a few minutes. The Medito courses really helped me establish a solid daily meditation practice.

Some Options for You

If you want to try meditation, the Medito app is a great place to start. You could also try the Calm app, the mediations available with FitBit premium, or one of the many meditation channels on YouTube.

Centering prayer might be an option for you if meditation doesn’t sound appealing. Again, there’s an app for that!

As I mentioned before, starting out was tough for me. I had trouble sitting still, so contemplative photography helped me get started with a stillness practice.

Just as with a prayer practice, the key is to pick a practice and start. Give yourself 30 days practice. Then, adjust as necessary.
