Getting yourself unstuck in life plagues everyone at some point. At least everyone I’ve ever known. I want to share with you a piece of my story.
Burned Out, Stuck, and Miserable
Seven years ago, I had everything you’re supposed to want. Great job, great husband, great house, and great friends.
But I was exhausted all the time, and I was completely miserable. I was morbidly obese and stressed out 99.9% of the time.
I didn’t know why, but nothing felt right. Nothing felt good. I was just going through the motions and trying to keep my head above water.
Something had to change. I was restless and couldn’t stand to be in my own skin.
My Cursillo Experience
I was already scheduled to attend Tennessee Episcopal Cursillo “up the mountain” in Sewanee, Tennessee.
Cursillo is a movement within the Episcopal Church that raises up and supports Christian leaders in ministry, helping them live out the Great Commission. During a three-day retreat, participants focus on the essentials of the Christian message, hear the call to take up their role as leaders in all the environments in which God has placed them, and receive tools to support their individual personal commitments to increased piety, study, and action through small friendship groups. Clergy and laity unite in mutual ministry to participate in Christ’s mission of reconciliation to the world. The Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee
My Cursillo began a journey of radical transformation both painful and joyous. I came down the mountain on a mission to find clarity about who I was and how I wanted to live my life.
I had no idea where to start, but I knew that I would need my Higher Power to light the way.
Getting Yourself Unstuck
I didn’t know what the next step would be, but I did three things I learned in my Alanon program:
- Practice stillness/silence every day
- Journal every day
- Pray for guidance and the courage to accept it every day
Things began to change VERY quickly. Sometimes frighteningly so.
Within months, I was changing jobs, and we were losing our home. We ended up spending two years living in a travel trailer failing at making our dream home happen.
We moved to a new city and made a fresh start, only to have everything unravel… Again.
But… I was unstuck, and I was HAPPY. Happier than I’d ever known was possible.
To quote my favorite author, you can’t steer a parked car. You have to move forward to find your direction.
