In 30 years of working with animals, I know it’s always better to be working with Mother Nature than against her! Yet, I only recently started applying those same principles to my own work.

Struggling against Mother Nature

I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago that I’m a classic tomboy. Give me jeans, boots, and dirt over a dress any day. Well, I carried that attitude into my studies and my career. I’ve always been determined to beat the boys at their own game.

For years, I worked my tail off to master every productivity strategy I could get my hands on to make the most of the 24 hour cycle our modern world is built on. And I’ve been damn good at it.

Unfortunately, my body operates on a 28-day cycle. I spent years cursing my menstrual cycle and being pissed off at myself for the 3-4 days a month that I was just plain exhausted.

I loved the times when I felt like superwoman and could do twice as much as my male counterparts, but that one week a month, I would have plugged a caffeine IV into my arm if I could just to power through it.

The Origin Membership

Last year was a rough one. From an E-4 tornado to gut health issues, I struggled with energy and motivation. I had lost my joy to grief and frustration.

This spring, I picked up my Kindle and started reading a book I had been avoiding: Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Ambitious Women by Kate Northrup. I bought it the day it came out but had been avoiding that “women talk.”

Three pages in I was kicking myself for not reading it sooner. The timing was perfect though, because the doors were opening to the Origin Membership (founded by Kate), and I wanted in.

The Origin Membership has hands down been the best investment I’ve ever made in myself.

Working with Mother Nature

First, I’ve learned that my menstrual cycle is an asset. I can plan my activities around my 28-day cycle and have more focus on those activities.

For example, I now plan my blogging activities around my cycle. During the first week, I outline four weeks worth of post. On week 2, I write the first drafts. On week 3, I edit. In the last week, I take time to reflect on how things went and brainstorm for the next 4 weeks.

Now, when it’s time to post, I’m not struggling with editing and SEO when I’m on week 1 or struggling with trying to be creative when I have my period. I just click the publish button on the post that’s ready to go.

And my content is so much better for it. When I’m writing first drafts, I’m ON FIRE! When I’m editing, I’m hyper-focused.

The principles apply in my “day job” too. I just plan activities (as much as I can) 4 weeks out instead of 7 days, so I can maximize the energy I’ll have when I’m doing those activities.

Thanks to Origin, I make small changes every day to work with my body instead of against it, and it’s having a HUGE impact on my work. I’m more focused and more satisfied. Best part… You can too!
