This week, I started a three part series on eating healthy on a budget. This week, I focused on increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

For a healthy diet, half your plate should be fruits and vegetables, and by increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables you automatically reduce the most expensive items on your plate: meat and dairy.

There are a few ways to reduce your costs for fruits and vegetables. First, try to get your fresh vegetables locally-grown and in season. Second, when you want something that isn’t in season or locally-grown, go with frozen.

Next week, we’ll talk about how getting your portion sizes right can help you eat higher quality ingredients without increasing your grocery budget!
