We spent seven days talking about nutrition and eating habits. We took a day to rest, reflect, and celebrate. Now, we’re going to spend the next few days talking about one of the four primary foods on the Integrative Nutrition Plate: Physical Activity.
Today’s challenge: move more!
Today, we’re not going to try and run 10 miles or lift weights for an hour. We’re not going to hit the Peleton either. We’re just going to find fun ways throughout our day to get our bodies moving.
Research shows that wile we do want to work in 45 minutes of exercise 3 days a week into our schedule for optimum health, we really need to find ways to move more throughout our day.
Let’s face it. Most of us aren’t ready for the personal trainer just yet. We’re still trying to loose weight and feel comfortable in the mirror. I get it. So the goal is to start by getting out of the chair at the office and off the couch at home.
If you have a fitness tracker or pedometer, make a commitment to get 10,000 steps in. Break in into chunks throughout your day, and make it happen. If you don’t, make a commitment to move for 10 minutes of every hour. Set yourself a timer.
Here are some ways you can make it happen:
- Instead of sending an email, walk to a co-workers office
- Take a lap around the office on the way to the restroom or copy room
- Go for a walk during you lunch break
- Take a walk to the mailbox
- Walk your dog (or cat?)
- Dance to your favorite song
- Dance in the kitchen while making dinner
- Dance while doing dishes
- Turn off the TV, turn on some music, and dance in the living room
Most importantly, have fun with this. Make your movement times a fun and well-served break throughout your day.
