During my health journey over the past decade, I can’t tell you how many people have told me that bananas are bad for me. In the last 10 years, I’ve beat cancer, eliminated high cholesterol, and said good-bye to adult acne, chronic rhinitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. I eat a banana almost every day.
It’s important to remember… While there are some general rules for healthy eating, what’s good for you isn’t necessarily what’s good for someone else.
There are some drawbacks to bananas, but there are also some great benefits, and they are definitely healthier than Zebra Cakes! (Side note: Once upon a time, I ate Zebra Cakes daily.)
Why do I eat bananas? They prevent leg cramps, they settle my stomach, and they satisfy my sweet tooth. 😀 I also feed them to my dogs when they get an upset stomach.
Interesting factoid… A study was done several years ago to study the negative effects of bananas. A group of average Americans added 23 bananas a day to their diet. Guess what? No negative side effects. None. Of course, that won’t be true for everyone.
Bananas are high on the glycemic index, so you when you eat them matters, and they should never be a meal replacement. If you live in the US, bananas are also never in season and never local, so be careful where you get your bananas and know how they were grown.
Here are a few of the benefits of eating bananas:
- Pre-workout boost loaded with antioxidants, fiber, potassium, and B6
- Ease or prevent muscle cramps by replenishing potassium
- Feed your friendly gut bacteria and improve digestion
- Decrease risk of stroke
- Improve kidney health
If you love bananas, buy high quality bananas and eat without guilt. Bananas are always better for you than Zebra Cakes! 😛
