Today, I want to talk to about primary food. Some of you may have heard of this concept, but I suspect many of you haven’t. So what is primary food? All of the things that nourish you that you don’t put on a plate.

Everyone has that family member that ate all the wrong things, drank too much, and smoked two packs of Marlboros a day but was healthy as a horse until the day s/he died at the ripe old age of 102. Right?

We all know that person is an anomaly, so what’s really going on?

We know people who eat all the right things and exercise but are always sick, and people who go out every Friday and eat junk and have never seen the inside of a gym but are never sick.

What’s going on? Primary food. The bottom line is that being healthy is more than just about your body. It’s about your mind and your soul too.

It may seem corny, but happy people are healthier. People who are fulfilled and grateful are healthier. People who are connected to their families, friends, and community are healthier.

People who hate their jobs, family, home, or whatever else aren’t healthy.

Here are a few categories of primary food to consider:

  • Career
  • Social Life
  • Home Environment
  • Physical Activity
  • Spirituality
  • Finances
  • Relationships

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate those areas of you life? What’s one thing you would love to change? What’s holding you back?

For me, it’s my finances. My husband and I took Financial Peace University last year and started a journey to get debt free. It hasn’t been easy and sometimes I get frustrated with how far we still have to go, but it’s worth the effort. I know when we’re done, it will significantly improve our quality of life.

For the next few weeks, I’ll be taking a look at each of these categories and offering some tips on how you can explore improving each area of your life and share with you what I’ve done to improve those areas in my life.

Just remember as we talk about primary food that everyone’s needs are different. What fulfills me may not fulfill you. You should seek out what fulfills you not what fulfills others. Find those things that make you want to get out of bed.

Happy eating!
